Inmate who killed cops attacks COs with hammer

MILWAUKEE — A Wisconsin prison inmate convicted of killing two Milwaukee police officers in 1985 used a claw hammer Monday to attack two correctional officers at the Fox Lake Correctional Institution.

Both officers required medical attention after the attack and one was still hospitalized Monday night, Wisconsin Department of Corrections spokesman John Dipko said.

Details on the nature of their injuries and the condition of the officer who was still hospitalized were not available Monday night, Dipko said.

According to Dipko, Terrance B. Davis, 50, convicted in the shooting deaths of police officers Rosario Collura and Leonard Lesnieski, attacked the corrections officers about 8:15 a.m. in the prison's furniture shop, operated by Badger State Industries.

A male employee of Badger subdued Davis, who was moved to a maximum security prison and put in segregation.

Dipko said an investigation was under way and the Fox Lake institution was under lockdown Monday night.

Collura, 39, and Lesnieski, 48, were shot March 19, 1985, after they stopped at N. 18th and W. Center streets to question a group of young men and came upon a drug deal.

As Davis was searched, he pulled a gun and shot the officers from close range.

Davis, who was buying marijuana with another man when the officers stopped, said he fired because he was carrying the gun illegally and didn't want to go back to jail.

He was convicted and sentenced to two life terms in prison.

Dipko said Davis was convicted in 1993 of battery by a prisoner at the Waupun Correctional Institution and sentenced to an additional five years in prison.
